Phil Jagielka tips Ross Barkley for Brazil trip

Phil Jagielka says that Ross Barkley has a good chance of earning a place in England's squad for the World Cup.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka believes that Ross Barkley has a good chance of earning a place in England's 23-man squad for the World Cup next month.

Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson was in attendance as the youngster opened the scoring in the 3-2 defeat to Manchester City in fine fashion, curling past Joe Hart from outside the box.

Hodgson is scheduled to announce his final panel for the trip to Brazil on May 12, and Jagielka says that the 20-year-old's "gentle reminder" of his talent may have earned him a spot on the plane.

"His performance can't have done him any harm," he told Sky Sports News. "And it's always nice to give a gentle reminder just before the squad is going to be announced.

"I don't think the performance he put in was going to be make or break - I think Roy has got a pretty good idea whether he is going to be on the plane or not - but if there was any inkling of what ability he has got; I think his goal was great and I think the performance on a whole that he put in was great.

"We are always telling Ross he needs to get involved in the games as much as possible and I think today he has had as many touches as I have seen him."

Barkley made his international debut in the 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over Moldova last August.
