Joey Barton comes out of international retirement

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton announces that he has made himself available for selection by England again.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has announced that he is available to play for England again, following their group-stage exit from the World Cup.

The 31-year-old retired from international football in May 2013, after making just one appearance for the Three Lions in a friendly against Spain in 2007.

However, after watching the performances of Roy Hodgson's side in the tournament, Barton believes that he is good enough to earn an international recall.

"After reviewing England's performance at the WC, I have decided to renounce my international retirement," he wrote on Twitter.

"Having seen the standard, I believe it's possible. Having played at the level before I feel I am a better player now than when I was capped.

"People might not know whether I'm being serious or not. Trust me, I am deadly serious. That's all I'll say on the matter for now."

England failed to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1958 in Brazil.
