Joey Barton has expressed his shock at Lionel Messi being named the best player of the tournament following Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Germany.
The Barcelona forward was awarded the Golden Boot after yesterday's 1-0 defeat in the Maracana.
The 27-year-old scored four goals and made one assist during the tournament in Brazil, but Barton believes that there were a number of players that performed better than the former Ballon d'Or winner.
Barton wrote on Twitter: "Still baffled by Messi winning 'best player' award."
Last night, the Queens Park Rangers midfielder tweeted: "Thomas Muller. James Rodriguez. Mascherano. Kroos. Hummels. Sanchez. All better at this tournament than Messi.
"But for me Arjen Robben was the best individual at this World Cup. Messi should send that in the post to him."
Meanwhile, Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was awarded the Golden Glove, while France's Paul Pogba earned the Young Player Award.
