Dele Alli: 'England need to be more clinical'

England midfielder Dele Alli concedes that the team lacked a clinical edge during their 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Malta at Wembley.

England midfielder Dele Alli has admitted that his side lacked a clinical edge during their World Cup qualifier with Malta this evening.

First-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and Alli were enough to give England a 2-0 victory in Gareth Southgate's first match as manager, but a number of other chances went begging.

Alli admitted that they could have made things more comfortable by taking some of those chances, but was content with the team's performance at Wembley.

"I do like to get into the box to get goals and assists, the chances were there but we need to be a bit more clinical," he told reporters.

"Gareth Southgate is a fantastic manager and he knows what I am about. He told me to go out there and play my football and it was a solid performance from the boys. We kept the ball and dominated the game."

England, who now top Group F, will next face Slovenia on Tuesday.
