Gary Neville 'will not be Sam Allardyce's assistant coach with England'

Gary Neville will reportedly not be named as assistant boss to the rumoured new England manager Sam Allardyce.

Gary Neville will reportedly not be appointed as Sam Allardyce's assistant boss in the England setup, despite previous reports suggesting otherwise.

The former Manchester United captain worked in Roy Hodgson's England backroom team for four years, but stepped down when the 68-year-old resigned following the Three Lions' Euro 2016 exit.

Allardyce has not yet been officially appointed as the new manager, but it is widely expected that the announcement from the Football Association is imminent.

There were reports that Neville would be open to working with Allardyce, but according to The Telegraph, the 41-year-old will not return to the fold, even if he is asked.

The report adds that the FA is keen to hire a young coach or former England player to work as assistant to Allardyce, who is expected to sign a two-year contract.

The former Bolton Wanderers boss took charge of Sunderland just nine months ago.
