FA appoint former Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd as national coach

The Football Association announce that former Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd has been appointed as a national coach focusing on youth development.

The Football Association have announced that former Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd has been appointed as a national coach.

The 43-year-old's first job will be to work with the England Under-19s alongside Noel Blake as they prepare to face Turkey next Wednesday in Chester.

Boothroyd will report to England Under-21 head coach Gareth Southgate and the governing body's director of elite development Dan Ashworth.

"I'm excited by this opportunity," said Boothroyd. "Youth development is where it all began for me and I have taken on aspects of that into my management - that love of coaching and developing players has kept going.

"At Watford, I helped bring through players like Ashley Young and Ben Foster early in their careers, and more recently, I had Saido Berahino when I was Northampton Town manager. I have always wanted to bring young players through."

Boothroyd was sacked by Northampton in December last year.
