Mainz ease to Energie Cottbus victory

FSV Mainz beat Energie Cottbus 3-0 to progress in the DFB-Pokal.

Two goals in three minutes helped Mainz 05 on their way to a comfortable victory away to Energie Cottbus in the first round of the DFB-Pokal this evening.

FSV were in front on the half-hour mark when Fabian Frei, whose goal knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League during his time with Basel last season, slotted past keeper Daniel Luck.

Mainz extended their lead on 33 minutes when Jairo Samperio rose highest to meet Park Soo-Ho's cross before beating a helpless Luck in the Cottbus goal.

The visitors sealed their passage into the next round after Yunus Malli teed up Christian Clemens for FSV's third goal just beyond the hour mark.

Mainz begin their league campaign at home to FC Ingolstadt next weekend.
