Preview: Dundee United vs. Dundee - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Scottish Premiership clash between Dundee United and Dundee, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

The Dundee derby takes place this Saturday with both teams trying to get back to winning ways following draws in their most recent outings.

Dundee are continuing to fight for survival as they sit bottom of the table, while just a point will guarantee Dundee United can be in the top half when the division splits.

Dundee United were held to a draw last weekend when they faced Hibernian as Ross Graham's 10th-minute goal was followed up by Harry Clarke's equaliser.

However, just a point will be all the Terrors need this Saturday in order to secure their place in the top half when the division splits after this weekend.

Tam Courts has guided his team into fourth place heading into this match, with three points keeping them in the top half right now.

Dundee United have struggled for consistency recently though, winning just once in their past six games in all competitions.

The Terrors have not lost either of their previous derby day matches this season, and having those bragging rights is important to the fans.

The two meetings that they have had in this campaign have been closely fought though, with Dundee United winning their first match 1-0, before the most recent encounter resulted in a goalless draw.

This will give the Dark Blues some confidence that they can secure an important result this weekend, with the club continuing to fight against the threat of relegation.

Dundee find themselves 12 points adrift of safety right now as they are currently propping up the division in 12th place, but there is just six between them and the relegation playoff spot.

This provides the fans with plenty of reason to believe they can survive, and Mark McGhee's team have been pushing themselves a lot of late with improved performances.

The Dark Blues fought from behind twice last weekend against Aberdeen, with goals from Jordan McGhee and Danny Mullen helping them to rescue a point.

Team News

Kevin McDonald, Nicky Clark and Graham were all brought into the Dundee United team last weekend, and considering the latter got on the scoresheet there might not be any tweaks.

Tony Watt and Marc McNulty are both expected to continue leading the line, despite the fact both men were injured in their recent draw.

Mullen marked his return to the Dundee starting lineup with a goal during their match against Aberdeen, and he is now expected to retain his place in the team.

However, there are question marks surrounding the fitness of Lee Ashcroft as he did not return to the squad last weekend.

Dundee United possible starting lineup:
Siegrist; Edwards, Mulgrew, Graham; Niskanen, McDonald, Levitt, Smith, Clark; McNulty, Watt

Dundee possible starting lineup:
Lawlor; Elliot, Kerr, McGhee, Sweeney, Marshall; McMullan, Byrne, McGowan; Mullen, Rudden

We say: Dundee United 2-0 Dundee

A derby day encounter is always a tense showdown, and that will certainly be the case this weekend when Dundee United host Dundee.

The visitors have plenty to fight for in terms of keeping their dreams of avoiding relegation going, but the hosts have a stronger squad, which could be the difference-maker.
