Chelsea are reportedly still planning to offer a new long-term contract to Ian Maatsen, despite his lack of game time.

Chelsea are reportedly still keen to hand a new long-term contract to Ian Maatsen.

The Netherlands Under-21s international enjoyed a number of loan stints away from Stamford Bridge before being kept in the first team by Mauricio Pochettino.

Initially, it appeared that Maatsen would receive regular game time with the Blues, but he remains on two starts and seven substitute outings for the season.

While the two starts have been made in the EFL Cup, the seven substitute appearances have totalled 107 minutes in the Premier League.

Chelsea have recently taken measures to strengthen their position regarding Maatsen, activating a 12-month extension of his contract.

Nevertheless, the 21-year-old is aware that co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital were prepared to sell him for a fee in the region of £31m to Burnley in the summer, Maatsen subsequently turning that move down.

As it stands, there is a feeling of all parties being in limbo as Maatsen is no nearer to having action on a weekly basis or being interested in fresh terms.

Last week, Maatsen suggested that he is 'ready to keep his options open' for the time being as he bids to earn a spot in the Netherlands' Euro 2024 squad.

However, according to Football Insider, Boehly and Clearlake Capital have plans to present a fresh contract offer to the player.

In keeping with how they have recently conducted their business, Chelsea would almost certainly look to offer Maatsen a contract of at least five years.

Despite the possibility of a new deal, the West Londoners will still be open to a sale in order to substantially boost their position with FFP.

Although Maatsen was with the PSV Eindhoven youth academy until 2018, he counts as a homegrown talent for Chelsea having spent more than three years at the club before the age of 21.

Maatsen is currently behind the likes of Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella in the left-back ranks, with Ben Chilwell also due to return in December.
