Chelsea are reportedly demanding £23m for Roma target Davide Zappacosta.
Blues manager Frank Lampard is understood to prefer academy graduate Reece James as backup right-back to Cesar Azpilicueta.
According to Goal, Roma are the only side currently interested in Zappacosta, but are struggling to find the funds to complete a deal.
The Serie A side could try and sign the Italian international on loan, but Chelsea would prefer a permanent transfer.
Zappacosta was an unused substitute on Wednesday night as the Blues lost the UEFA Super Cup on penalties to Liverpool.
Despite the English transfer window having closed, Chelsea are still actively looking to sell players to the European market, with midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko another player who could be offloaded before the end of the month.
