Chelsea 'failed with approach for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen'

Chelsea reportedly failed with an attempt to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen before bringing in Edouard Mendy during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea reportedly failed with an approach for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen during the summer transfer window.

The Blues were on the lookout for a new keeper amid questions over Kepa Arrizabalaga, eventually signing Edouard Mendy from Rennes in a deal worth around £21.5m.

Frank Lampard's side had been credited with an interest in a host of other shot-stoppers before that, with the likes of Jan Oblak, Mike Maignan and Andre Onana among the names linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claims that Chelsea also made an approach to sign Ter Stegen from Barcelona.

The Premier League outfit reportedly made contact with the 28-year-old in an attempt to convince him not to sign a new contract at Camp Nou, with his current deal due to expire in 2022.

Chelsea's approach was given short shrift, though, while interest from Juventus and Inter Milan is also expected to come to nothing with Ter Stegen thought to be closing in on a contract extension.
