Ray Wilkins backs Antonio Conte to do a "good job" as Chelsea manager

Ray Wilkins backs Antonio Conte to do a "good job" at Chelsea after he was appointed as Jose Mourinho's successor.

Former Chelsea assistant coach Ray Wilkins has claimed that Antonio Conte's previous success proves that he is capable of winning trophies at Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Juventus boss was confirmed as Jose Mourinho's successor on Monday after agreeing a three-year deal.

Conte will replace interim coach Guus Hiddink in the summer when his contract as Italy national team boss expires at the end of Euro 2016.

"I think it's probably the best-kept secret that hasn't been kept, that [Conte] will be coming," Wilkins told Sky Sports News. "He's done exceptionally well at Juventus so there is no reason to suggest he won't do well at Chelsea.

"He's a youthful, energetic character and there is no reason to suggest he won't do a good job. This year they've had a torrid time and it's not been pleasant to watch at times but Antonio comes in with a clean sheet.

"He's very keen on the European scene is [club owner Roman] Abramovich but they have to compete for the Premier League too. Titles are important for a club like Chelsea - the Premier League is their bread and butter."

Chelsea are currently tenth in the league table, ten points off the top four.
