The Premier League says that its announcement of Jose Mourinho's Chelsea return was a "publishing error".

The Premier League has announced the return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea on its website by mistake.

The organisation said that the story, which appeared with Monday's date and was later removed, was a "publishing error". It added that it had no inside knowledge of a deal.

"Portuguese coach is back at Stamford Bridge after signing a xx-year contract," read the headline.

Mourinho managed his final Real Madrid game on Saturday, ending with a 4-2 win over Osasuna in La Liga, and has been widely tipped to return to the club where he earned two Premier League titles.

Chelsea have made no comment on the issue.
