Jose Mourinho bemused by Mike Riley apology

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reveals that he has been left bemused by referee chief Mike Riley's apology to West Bromwich Albion head coach Steve Clarke after the Blues were awarded a late penalty against the Baggies.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is "curious" as to whether all managers will receive an apology if they are on the end of a debatable refereeing decision.

Referees chief Mike Riley apologised to West Bromwich Albion head coach Steve Clarke after Chelsea were awarded a late penalty in the 2-2 draw between the two teams a fortnight ago, but Mourinho has admitted that he has been left perplexed by Riley's actions.

The 50-year-old told reporters: "I am curious to know if people see that as a normal situation, if now on it is going to be the same for everybody. Nobody called me to apologise that it wasn't a free kick against West Brom for their second goal, or for a penalty against Everton.

"I am curious to know if Steve Bruce got a phone call, if Chris Hughton got a phone call, if Michael Laudrup got a phone call.

"For referees, if, hypothetically, they make a mistake, they are publicly exposed by their own boss."

The draw at Stamford Bridge resulted in Chelsea maintaining their position in the top four of the Premier League table.
