Olivier Giroud unhappy with current Chelsea role

Olivier Giroud admits that he does not want to be regarded as Chelsea's backup forward throughout this season.

Olivier Giroud has acknowledged that he is currently unhappy with being used as backup to Tammy Abraham at Chelsea.

Since making the switch to Stamford Bridge in January 2018, Giroud has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the starting lineup.

Despite Frank Lampard replacing Maurizio Sarri in the dugout, the World Cup winner has remained as second choice, this time to Abraham who netted four Premier League goals during August.

However, while saying that he is happy to help out the younger players at the club, Giroud has insisted that he still has the qualities required to win back his spot in the team.

When asked whether he is content with his role on the bench, the 32-year-old told Le Figaro: "Obviously not, I have goals in my head. I'm here to help the new generation, but the retirement time has not come.

"I'm still hungry and have a lot of ambition. I don't just want to be Chelsea's number-two striker, for sure. Just because I'm here as an older brother for young people, it doesn't mean I'm out on the sidelines."

Giroud has featured for just 101 minutes during Chelsea's opening four top-flight fixtures.
