Diego Simeone wants Atletico Madrid stay

Diego Simeone insists that he is happy at Atletico Madrid amid reports linking him with the managerial vacancy at Chelsea.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has suggested that he will stay in the Spanish capital for the foreseeable future amid reports linking him with a move to the Premier League.

The 45-year-old, who guided Atletico to their first La Liga title in 18 years in 2013-14, has been tipped to become Jose Mourinho's permanent successor at Chelsea once the season ends.

Speaking to El Pais about his future, Simeone said: "Why can't I be here longer? Why did I choose a five-year contract? Because I see a club that is 'virgin' and Miguel Angel (Gil Marin, chief executive) and Enrique (Cerezo, president) have the ability to open up new sources to strengthen in. It's not easy to leave Atletico.

"More than a team we are a family, and we are a real family. Obviously we have internal problems, there are players who get angry and who will get angry because they don't play. I am the father and the grandfather is a role for Miguel Angel Gil and Enrique Cerezo.

"We have a potential that no-one has. Oblak, Gimenez, Vietto, Carrasco, Oliver, Koke, Correa, Saul, Lucas, Thomas ... 10 young players and the veterans are at the perfect age."

Heading into the winter break, Simeone's charges find themselves second in La Liga, level on points with leaders Barcelona and two clear of city rivals Real.
