Astrit Ajdarevic then came close for the hosts when he latched on to Jordan Cousins' header and volleyed an effort wide.
Reza Ghoochanneijhad was next to threaten for Charlton when he was played through by Ajdarevic, but saw his strike kept out by Adam Bogdan.
Bolton soon had a good opportunity of their own through Neil Danns, who fired an effort just over the bar.
In the final minute of the half Johnnie Jackson tried his luck from long range, but fired his strike wide of the post as the teams went into the break all square.
