Celtic defeat Motherwell to go top

Goals either side of half time give Celtic a 2-0 win over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic have moved to the top of the Scottish Premiership with a routine 2-0 victory over Motherwell.

The Hoops could have opened the scoring in the fourth minute when a menacing cross from Emilio Izaguirre caused havoc inside the opposition's box, but it was eventually dealt with.

Neil Lennon's side broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Mikael Lustig picked out Anthony Stokes inside the box, and the striker found the top corner with a right-footed drive.

Celtic dominated play during the first period and were only denied a second by the good form of Motherwell goalkeeper Lee Hollis, who produced a good save to foil Kris Commons on the half-hour mark.

James Forrest struck a follow-up, but Stephen McManus cleared off the line to keep the scoreline down to 1-0 at the break.

Lennon's men doubled their lead shortly after the restart through a sublime solo effort from Commons, who beat two defenders and lifted the ball over Hollis into the net.

Stokes and Commons went on to waste opportunities to extend Celtic's advantage event further, while Motherwell struggled to create anything below half-chances all afternoon.

The visitors almost reduced the deficit four minutes from time, but John Sutton's strike was kept out by Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
