Celtic captain Scott Brown has signed a new contract extension that will keep him at Parkhead until the summer of 2015.

The midfielder almost left Hibernian for then Premier League side Reading before his switch to Glasgow.

He has since made 123 appearances for the Bhoys and was given the armband in February of last year.

Speaking to the club's website, Brown said: "I am absolutely delighted to sign this new contract with Celtic and commit my future to the club.

"I´m pleased that this is now all sorted and now I just want to get on with the job in hand."

Celtic have had an indifferent start to this season but are now within touching distance of Old Firm rivals Rangers, who are four points clear at the top.

Manager Neil Lennon spoke of his delight at the new deal, adding: "We are delighted Scott has committed himself to the club.

"He is a crucial member of our squad and someone we felt it was very important to keep at the club. He is a special player and his commitment, drive and all-round ability is something we feel is very important to us."

Brown and Celtic next face a trip to Dundee United on Sunday.
