Sam Vokes: 'Alan Shearer was my hero'

Burnley striker Sam Vokes explains why Premier League goalscoring great Alan Shearer was his hero growing up as a Southampton supporter.

Burnley striker Sam Vokes has revealed how he has tried to model his game on former England captain Alan Shearer.

Vokes grew up as a Southampton fan, with Shearer as one of his heroes, and the Clarets forward has tried to emulate the Premier League's all-time leading scorer.

He told The Telegraph: "Since the age of three, I watched Southampton week in, week out, standing on the terraces at the Dell with my old man, watching Matt Le Tissier.

"Every Christmas I got bought the shirt with his name on the back. Le Tissier and Alan Shearer were big heroes of mine.

"I always looked up to Shearer. He was that kind of robust forward, always brought people into play and scored – he's still way out ahead in Premier League goals."

Burnley are currently 17th in the division, one point above the relegation places.
