Burnley boss Sean Dyche: 'Tom Heaton ready to challenge Nick Pope'

Burnley boss Sean Dyche claims that goalkeepers "know the score" as Tom Heaton begins to challenge Nick Pope for an opportunity back in the first team.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has indicated that Nick Pope will remain his first-choice goalkeeper, while also suggesting that Tom Heaton is ready to challenge for his place.

In September, Heaton sustained a shoulder injury which has kept him out for seven months and during his absence, Pope has impressed to such an extent that he featured in the most recent England squad.

Pope is likely to continue in his role between the sticks, but Dyche has hinted that his current number one should expect competition from Heaton.

At a press conference, the 46-year-old told reporters: "I don't think it is difficult to balance. Tom knows the job, as does Anders [Lindegaard] and [Adam] Legzdins behind them. Goalies know the script. Whether you're first choice, second choice or fighting to get involved, that is just the lie of the land with goalkeepers.

"Pope is doing nicely, he's playing well and having a good season. Tom has been a fantastic servant over time and Anders and Legz are still looking to earn their spurs here."

Burnley currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League table.
