Preview: Millwall vs. Bristol City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Championship clash between Millwall and Bristol City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Millwall and Bristol City square off in the Championship on Wednesday night with both teams unbeaten in their last five league fixtures.

However, 10 places separate the clubs in the standings, a consequence of the home side recording four successive draws.

There have been times during Gary Rowett's reign as Millwall boss when collecting a draw has been perceived to be a positive result.

That is currently not an opinion shared by the club's fanbase with the draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday representing their sixth stalemate in nine games.

Sitting just four above the relegation zone and three points adrift of the top 10, a couple of victories would make all the difference to the Lions.

However, having failed to score more than twice in a match and keeping just one clean sheet all season, it is difficult to envisage a sudden upturn in form.

Matt Smith netted the opener for Millwall at the City Ground, ending his wait for a goal in the Championship this campaign.

Rowett will point to his team going five matches without suffering defeat at the second tier, an argument that Nigel Pearson will share regarding his Bristol City side.

The wait for a victory at Ashton Gate has been extended to 15 matches as a result of their 1-1 draw at home to Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Nevertheless, collecting nine points from five matches has effectively kept Pearson in a job after an uninspiring opening six months in charge.

Bristol City are currently the form team on the road in the Championship with away victories being recorded at Reading, Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers.

Team News

Connor Mahoney and Sheyi Ojo could retain their places in the Millwall side after lively performances against Forest.

Jed Wallace is unlikely to return to the team as he continues to recover from illness, but Billy Mitchell is an alternative in midfield if Rowett opts to introduce fresh legs.

Han-Noah Massengo remains absent for Bristol City as he continues to recover from an injury sustained at QPR earlier this month.

Pearson could match Millwall by switching to a back three, allowing for Nathan Baker to return to the defence and Jay Dasilva moving into the left wing-back role.

Kasey Palmer may be recalled to the starting lineup, with Andreas Weimann being preferred ahead of Nahki Wells in attack.

Millwall possible starting lineup:
Bialkowski; Ballard, Hutchinson, Wallace; Leonard, Kieftenbeld, Saville, Malone; Mahoney, Ojo; Smith

Bristol City possible starting lineup:
Bentley; Kalas, Atkinson, Baker; Tanner, Bakinson, James, Dasilva; Palmer; Weimann, Martin

We say: Millwall 1-1 Bristol City

Given their form away from Ashton Gate, there is an argument that Bristol City deserve to be regarded as favourites for this contest. However, when Millwall are involved, we can only back a draw featuring hard work and a lack of goals.
