Marinus Dijkhuizen keen to build on Mark Warburton's success at Brentford

Brentford's new head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen says that he wants to "build on the base" that Mark Warburton has built at the club.

New Brentford head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen has set his sights on building on the "good base" left for him by previous manager Mark Warburton.

Former SBV Excelsior manager Dijkhuizen, 43, was unveiled at the Bees' Jersey Road training ground this afternoon and spoke highly of his predecessor Warburton, who guided the club to fifth place in their first season back in the Championship after 21 years away.

Warburton decided not to stay on because he didn't agree with the club's new stats-based 'moneyball' mentality, but Dijkhuizen is confident of picking up where the Englishman left off.

"There is a good base for me to build on. They play already good football," Dijkhuizen told reporters at Thursday's press conference.

"They were playing good football to get to fifth in the league. It's the most difficult to start, it's a good base to play.

"He has done a great job over here in the last couple of years. I respect that. Now, we can build on that base."

Brentford's new co-director of football Rasmus Ankersen was also present at the unveiling and said that it would be "stupid" not to aim for a top-six finish again.

"It would be stupid not to try and do better than last season," said Ankersen. "And doing better than last season is being in the race for promotion again.

"We definitely think that's possible but football is a random game.

"There are no guarantees but we aim high. If we fail this year we will aim high next year but it's a club with big ambitions."

Ankersen is also chairman at Brentford owner Matthew Benham's other club, Danish outfit FC Midtjylland.
