Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus turned down some of "the best clubs in the world" to remain at the Westfalenstadion, according to chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Marco Reus has said that he is "happy and proud" to have committed his future to Borussia Dortmund by signing a new five-and-a-half-year deal.

The Germany international has officially put pen to paper on a contract running through to 2023 following the conclusion of drawn-out talks with the Bundesliga outfit.

News of the new long-term deal should put an end to regular links with Premier League sides, most recently being tipped to join Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, and Reus believes that it also sends out a signal of intent from BVB.

"I am happy and proud to be able to announce today that I'll continue to wear the shirt of Borussia," he told the club's official website. "Dortmund is my home, the BVB is my club. Since my childhood I dreamed in black and yellow to run and play for this club.

"This signature is a clear sign of the future. The fact that I can renew my commitment to the club today is also a thank you to our fantastic fans who have always helped me."

Chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke added: "We are very pleased to be able to announce the extension of the contract with Marco Reus. Although the best clubs in the world have made offers to him again and again in the past, he has decided to extend his contract.

"I have a special personal relationship with him. The talks with Marco and his advisers were constructive and harmonious from the beginning."

Reus has scored eight goals in nine Bundesliga outings either side of an injury layoff.
