The defending German champions pulled ahead as early as the sixth minute when Marco Reus scored from a direct free kick.

Dortmund continued to dominate proceedings at the Signal-Iduna Park, but conceded the equaliser in the 39th minute.

Marcel Schmelzer was sent off for handling Bas Dost's shot inside the penalty area and Diego successfully converted the consequent spot kick.

Two minutes later Wolfsburg went 2-1 up as Naldo turned in Diego's delivery from close range.

Dortmund commenced the second half the better of the two sides, with Reus and Mario Gotze both trying their luck with spectacular attempts, but both failed to keep his attempts on target.

Jurgen Klopp's side were given a penalty of their own on the hour-mark when Simon Kjaer brought down Robert Lewandowski inside the Wolfsburg penalty area.

Jakub Blaszczykowski stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from 12 yards.

However, Wolfsburg bagged the points with their third goal of the afternoon in the 73rd minute.

Dost latched on to Diego's through-ball and fired in from close range.
