Preview: Bordeaux vs. Nice - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Ligue 1 clash between Bordeaux and Nice, including team news and predicted lineups.

Bordeaux and Nice will both be looking to bounce back from respective defeats when the two sides lock horns at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique on Sunday lunchtime.

Bordeaux suffered their first defeat of the season to Lens in gameweek four, while Nice were put to the sword by Paris Saint-Germain by three goals to nil last weekend.

Before travelling to newly-promoted Lens last Saturday, Bordeaux's defence was yet to be breached following two draws and one victory from their opening three games of the season.

However, Ignatius Ganago would be the one to overcome the staunch rearguard action of Bordeaux following Remi Oudin's mistake, with Gael Kakuta soon doubling Lens' lead from 12 yards after Paul Baysse was given his marching orders.

Samuel Kalu came off the bench to grab a consolation goal for Jean-Louis Gasset's men, but their mistakes ultimately proved costly as Bordeaux succumbed to their first defeat of the campaign.

Les Girondins will no doubt be angered to concede their first two goals of the season courtesy of individual mistakes, and Gasset must be quick to eradicate any further defensive doubts as Bordeaux look to get some more wins on the board.

As things stand, Bordeaux currently lie 13th at this early stage, although with just two goals conceded, only PSG, Lille and Saint-Etienne can boast an equally impressive defensive record.

Meanwhile, Nice saw their squad hit by a coronavirus outbreak before the fourth gameweek of the season – an occurrence that no side can afford before facing off against the reigning champions.

While PSG struggled for results at the start of the season, Thomas Tuchel's side are starting to look more like their familiar selves and Patrick Vieira's men were no match for the champions, with Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe all getting on the scoresheet.

Nice now have two wins and two losses to their name thus far and are still set to be without a number of players for the weekend, so the Aiglons faithful will not be overly optimistic about their side's chances of ending their losing streak against a dogged Bordeaux outfit.

Both fixtures between Bordeaux and Nice last season ended in 1-1 stalemates, although Bordeaux are winless in 11 against their weekend opponents.

Team News

Gasset will be forced into one defensive change with Baysse suspended, but Pablo has returned to training and could deputise alongside Laurent Koscielny.

There could be some changes up top with Kalu pushing for a start, while Josh Maja will also be hoping to spearhead the Girondins attack.

As for Nice, Kasper Dolberg, Alexis Claude-Maurice and Stanley Nsoki all tested positive for coronavirus before the clash with PSG, but reports have suggested that it is only the latter who will be forced to miss out here.

Patrick Burner and Wylan Cyprien are being linked with moves away so are not expected to be involved.

Robson Bambu has returned to training and has a chance of being involved, although Dante and Andy Pelmard are expected to pair up in the heart of Vieira's defence again.

Bordeaux possible starting lineup:
Costil; Sabaly, Koscielny, Pablo, Benito; Otavio, Basic; Kalu, Preville, Oudin; Maja

Nice possible starting lineup:
Benitez; Atal, Pelmard, Dante, Kamara; Schneiderlin, Melou, Thuram; Ndoye, Dolberg, Lopes

We say: Bordeaux 1-0 Nice

The goals that Bordeaux shipped against Lens were down to individual errors rather than a lacklustre team effort, and Gasset's men are expected to rectify those mistakes even in Baysse's absence. Nice have seen their squad ravaged by injuries, coronavirus and transfer speculation, so we are backing the hosts to just edge this one and end their winless run against Les Aiglons.
