Bolton defender Gary Cahill backs referee Stuart Attwell, despite last weekend's blunder against Spurs.

Bolton defender Gary Cahill has backed referee Stuart Attwell, despite the controversial red card shown against him last weekend.

Attwell sent the Bolton defender off for a first-half foul on Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker, although replays seemed to suggest it was the incorrect decision.

Cahill won his subsequent appeal, making him available for the clash with Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, and he has indicated that he holds no grudge.

"It's well documented the decision was wrong, but I really like Stuart as a person. It was a mistake, everyone makes them," said Cahill.

The England international, whose contract with Bolton expires at the end of the season, looks set to leave the club in January.
