Wolverhampton Wanderers hand Blackburn Rovers opening-day defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 thanks to David Edwards's controversial winner.

David Edwards's controversial goal on the stroke of half time was enough to give Wolverhampton Wanderers a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on the opening day of the season.

Jordan Rhodes almost put the hosts ahead inside the first two minutes when his 25-yard strike cannoned off the outside of the post.

Rhodes than had a goal chalked off for offside, before Wolves took the lead through Benik Afobe who collected a long ball forward and fired beyond David Raya.

Blackburn were level 10 minutes later when Craig Conway's shot deflected off Richard Stearman and looped up and over Carl Ikeme in the Wolves goal.

However, Wolves retook the lead on the stroke of half time, albeit in controversial fashion as Edwards appeared to use his hand to turn Nouha Dicko's cross beyond Raya.

The second half began at a much slower pace, but Blackburn felt they should have had a penalty when Adam Henley went down in the box just after the hour mark, but their appeals were waved away.

Rhodes then fired inches wide after Nathan Delfouneso flicked on a Rovers free kick, and substitute Bengali-Fode Koita struck the post in added time but Wolves held on to take all three points.
