Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: 'Bayern Munich could have made more from Xherdan Shaqiri'

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claims that the club could have made more money had they not agreed to let Xherdan Shaqiri join Inter Milan.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed that the club rejected bigger bids before allowing Xherdan Shaqiri to join Inter Milan in the January transfer window.

An initial six-month loan move will be turned into a permanent deal worth £11m this summer, but Rummenigge insists that the Bundesliga champions could have received more for the Swiss midfielder, whose opportunities in the Bayern side were limited following Pep Guardiola's arrival in 2013.

"We would have earned more had we sold him to England so you could say we gave Inter a discount," Rummenigge told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Inter have hit the jackpot with the capture of Shaqiri. He is still young and has a lot of quality. He is a player who can make the difference.

"There were a lot of Premier League clubs after him as well, but I advised him to go to Inter. Shaqiri needed regular playing time again."

Shaqiri, who has scored once in nine Serie A games, was repeatedly linked with a move to Liverpool before arriving at San Siro.
