Barnsley full-back Luke Potter announces his retirement from football at 22 years of age due to chronic knee problems.

Barnsley defender Luke Potter has been forced to retire from football due to a chronic knee injury.

The 22-year-old, who has not played for the Championship side since November 2010, made the decision following a number of operations.

"I'm afraid this is what it's come to," said Potter. "It's not what I wanted to do. You have to make a decision at some time.

"I'd like to thank all the physio staff here at Barnsley who have been magnificent. [Craig Sedgwick], Chris Burton and Kevin Hornsby have all been brilliant."

Director Don Rowing added: "The club has lost a good player but one has to feel for Luke, whose promising career has been cut short by his injury.

"Luke signed as a scholar at the same time as I started at the club and I've found him to be very committed and professional in everything he does."

Potter came through the ranks at Oakwell and joined the youth team in 2005.
