David Flitcroft backs Micky Mellon for Barnsley job

Former Barnsley manager David Flitcroft tips caretaker boss Micky Mellon to replace him at Oakwell.

Former Barnsley manager David Flitcroft has expressed his belief that Micky Mellon is the right man to succeed him at Oakwell.

Mellon, who joined Barnsley as Flitcroft's assistant in 2012, has taken temporary charge of team affairs following the 39-year-old's sacking last weekend.

Flitcroft has said that the former Fleetwood Town manager has the experience to take the job on a permanent basis.

"He has an incredible and insatiable appetite for football and I couldn't think of a better person to keep the team in the league," Flitcroft told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I knew when I took Micky on that he was a manager in his own right because he was very successful with Fleetwood. He gives you experience and I hope he can do it."

Mellon managed Fleetwood between 2008 and 2012.
