Antoine Griezmann insists that he did not leave Atletico Madrid for Barcelona over the summer in order to win the Champions League.

Antoine Griezmann has insisted that he did not leave Atletico Madrid for Barcelona over the summer in order to win the Champions League.

Following five seasons at Atletico, the Frenchman completed a move to Catalonia for a fee of £108m over the summer window.

His performances at Camp Nou have been mixed so far this term, with the forward netting six goals in all competitions since August.

Speaking to UEFA TV about the reasons behind his exit, Griezmann said: "I didn't leave Atletico neither to win the Champions League nor to win more trophies.

"I left Atleti to learn a new style of play, new philosophies. To learn another style of football, another team. Atleti can win LaLiga [Santander] and the Champions League any year."

Atletico came painfully close to winning their first ever Champions League title in 2014 as well as in 2016, losing to Real Madrid in the final on both occasions.

Barcelona, having last won the accolade in 2015, were famously knocked out of Europe by Liverpool at the semi-final stage last season.
