Aritz Aduriz at the double as Athletic Bilbao thump Villarreal

Athletic Bilbao finish their La Liga campaign on a high by thumping Villarreal 4-0 at San Mames.

Athletic Bilbao rounded off their La Liga campaign in style with a comprehensive 4-0 thrashing of Villarreal this evening.

Being eight points from sixth-placed Villarreal in the final Europa League spot, Ernesto Valverde's men welcomed Los Che to San Mames with only pride to play for.

That appeared to be enough incentive, however, as the hosts raced into a 2-0 goal lead inside 25 minutes.

First, Aritz Aduriz executed a 'Panenka' in sending Bilbao ahead from the penalty spot, before the striker turned provider to set up Andoni Iraola shortly after.

It was three on 36 minutes when Benat Etxebarria curled a free kick beyond Juan Carlos as Los Leones established a healthy advantage at the break.

If there was any doubt over the result after their commanding first-half showing, then Aduriz extinguished them by adding a fourth just after the hour mark for his sixth goal in as many games.

Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell went close on a number of occasions, but the Costa Rica international could not provide the spark that Villarreal needed to get back into the contest.
