Report: Thomas Vermaelen arrives in Spain

A report claims that Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has arrived in Spain ahead of a move to Barcelona.

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has reportedly arrived in Spain ahead of a move to Barcelona.

The Belgian centre-back, who is believed to have agreed a five-year deal with the Catalan outfit, is expected to undergo a medical this afternoon before putting pen to paper.

Manchester United had been strongly linked with a move for the 28-year-old, but talks reportedly broke down when United would not include Chris Smalling as part of the deal.

Barcelona have since swooped and according to Sky Sports News, the defender is currently in Catalonia ahead of officially signing for the Spanish outfit.

Vermaelen joined Arsenal from Ajax in 2009.
