Mikel Arteta: 'Granit Xhaka will stay at Arsenal'

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says that he expects Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka to remain at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has said that he expects Granit Xhaka to remain at the Emirates Stadium.

The Switzerland international has been strongly linked with a move away from the Gunners in recent days, with Hertha Berlin believed to be keen to secure a January deal.

Xhaka returned from illness to play the full 90 minutes against Manchester United on New Year's Day, though, and Arteta revealed after the match that the midfielder is set to remain in London.

"I think he is going to stay. I really like him, he can be a tremendous player for the football club. I think he will stay, yes," Arteta told reporters when asked about the former Basel youngster's future.

The 27-year-old was stripped of the armband at Arsenal earlier this season following an on-field outburst.

However, he has been back in favour since Unai Emery was dismissed as head coach and now looks likely to remain with the Gunners beyond the end of the January deadline.
