How Arsenal could line up against Manchester City

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for their clash with Manchester City as Premier League action returns after 100 days away.

After 100 days out of action, the Premier League returns on Wednesday and Arsenal travel to champions Manchester City in the standout fixture of the first night back.

The match will see Mikel Arteta go up against his former mentor Pep Guardiola for the first time since taking over as Arsenal boss, looking to extend the Gunners' league-best unbeaten run.

Arsenal are yet to taste defeat in the Premier League this calendar year - the only club that can boast that - and won three games in a row immediately prior to lockdown.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Arteta's side could line up for the trip to the Etihad Stadium as they aim to pick up where they left off.

Out: Calum Chambers (knee)
Doubtful: Lucas Torreira (ankle), Cedric Soares (nose)

The coronavirus stoppage has given a number of players the chance to return to fitness, and Arteta therefore has much closer to a full complement now then he did for Arsenal's last outing.

Left-back in particular looks well-stocked again with Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney fit again, the latter now hoping to kickstart his Arsenal career after an injury-plagued debut campaign so far.

Cedric Soares has recovered from the knee injury which has delayed his Arsenal debut so far, although he now has a broken nose which could keep him out of this match and could even see his Arsenal spell come to an end before he has even played a game for the club.

Calum Chambers is also an injury doubt, but Lucas Torreira could be in contention having made good progress in his recovery from a fractured ankle - a serious injury which has only ended up seeing him miss one game.

One of the biggest decisions to make for Arteta will be how attacking to go against a Man City side capable of scoring lots of goals.

A full-strength side would probably see Nicolas Pepe, Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette all start, but the Spaniard may consider that too gung-ho an approach, particularly with Dani Ceballos behind them too.

Aubameyang is the most likely of that quartet to start as he chases a slice of history - the Golden Boot contender could score his 50th Premier League goal for Arsenal in just his 76th outing, breaking Thierry Henry's club record of quickest to the half-century mark by seven games.

Lacazette will hope to have earned his place back in training despite falling behind Eddie Nketiah in the pecking order before lockdown, while at the other end of the field Pablo Mari could be preferred to Shkodran Mustafi.
