Nigel Winterburn: 'Arsene Wenger is changing his ways'

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes that Arsene Wenger should be given the chance to turn the club into Premier League champions again.

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has insisted that Arsene Wenger should be given the chance to turn the club into title winners again.

The Gunners boss, who last guided the North London outfit to the Premier League title in 2004, has come under fire following Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Stoke City.

Winterburn believes that the signings of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil show that the Frenchman is prepared to abandon his usual frugal approach in the transfer market in a bid to reverse their fortunes.

"My take on it is we are in a new period for Arsenal, particularly since the signing of Mesut Ozil," Winterburn told talkSPORT.

"I'd like to see him in charge simply I because I'd like to see, with the money I believe is now available, whether he will change and look to bring in new players, and it is looking like he will.

"Arsenal have never spent £40m before like they did with Ozil and £30m like they did on Alexis Sanchez. Now, if he went out and did that on a holding midfield player and maybe another centre-half then people would start to say Arsene Wenger is changing his ways."

The Gunners are sixth in the Premier League table, 13 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
