Arsene Wenger has sympathy with Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla as they fight for a place in the star-studded Spain squad.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he feels for his duo of Spanish midfielders over opportunities to play international football.

Santi Cazorla has 47 caps for the reigning World and European champions, while Arteta is yet to win a Spain cap.

Wenger thinks that both players would have far more international appearances if they were any other nationality.

He said: "You would think Cazorla or Arteta would play regularly in many other countries, but with Spain they don't because they have Andres Iniesta, Sergi Busquets and Xavi there.

"Even Cesc Fabregas does not always play."

Cazorla and vice-captain Arteta have been ever present for the Gunners so far this season.
