Thomas Vermaelen says that Jack Wilshere can be one of the best players in the world when he returns to full fitness.

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has insisted that teammate Jack Wilshere can become one of the best players in the world.

The 20-year-old missed more than a year of action following an injury he sustained in pre-season in 2011 but has featured in two Under-21 games for the Gunners in recent weeks.

Vermaelen feels that Wilshere can be one of the top players in the world when he returns to full fitness.

"For me, he can be one of the best midfielders in the world. He has the potential for that," Vermaelen told Arsenal Player.

"He looks much stronger and that's good.

"I am really happy he is coming back now. Jack is working on his match-fitness and that is the most important thing. I think in the future [he] will lift the team."

Wilshere has five England caps to his name.
