Paul Merson criticises Arsenal spending

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson admits that he does not know why the club did not spend more money during the transfer window.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has admitted that he does not know why the club did not spend more money during the transfer window.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was the only new arrival at the Emirates Stadium over the summer, meaning that the Gunners were the only club in Europe's top five divisions to not sign an outfield player.

Despite signing the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez for sizeable transfer fees in recent seasons, Merson is concerned that the club is still reluctant to spend big.

When it was suggested that Arsenal supporters would not be satisfied over the lack of new faces, Merson told Sky Sports News: "I wouldn't be either.

"You're an Arsenal season ticket holder, you're paying top dollar. It's their money, it's the fans' money. It's not Arsene Wenger's money, it's not the club's money. It's the fans' money that they've paid to buy players."

Arsenal return to Premier League action on September 12 when they host Stoke City.
