Campbell tips Ramsey for Arsenal captaincy

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell is adamant that Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey should be given the captaincy by new Gunners manager Unai Emery.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has claimed that Aaron Ramsey should be given the captaincy by new Gunners manager Unai Emery.

The Wales international is out of contract next summer but has reportedly been offered a bumper new deal by the club in a bid to help Emery build the team around the midfielder.

Campbell, who played for Arsenal between 1988 and 1995, believes that Ramsey "ticks quite a lot of boxes" and should be considered for the armband ahead of the likes of Jack Wilshere and Petr Cech.

"Aaron Ramsey ticks quite a lot of boxes," the 48-year-old told talkSPORT. "He is one of the long-serving players in the first team. If there is a structure, Aaron Ramsey could be that guy.

"For the last four or five years, Arsenal went soft, and it's showed in the league standings. You can look at leadership in two different ways. Everyone talks about the leaders like Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira, but those players are not easily available.

"The second way you can get leadership is through organisation. When different parts of the team are functioning properly, players within that system will be the leader, and I believe that's the way Unai Emery is going to do it.

"They will be well drilled, there will be certain triggers, and in order to have a trigger you're going to have to be able to communicate, and that's where certain players are going to have to take that leadership role on."

Ramsey has made 331 appearances for the North London club, scoring 59 goals and registering 57 assists.
