Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Athletic Bilbao are three of the biggest casualties at the last-16 stage of this season's Europa League.

Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Athletic Bilbao have all exited the Europa League at the last-16 stage following Thursday's second-leg games.

The German giants were unable to find the breakthrough in a goalless draw at Red Bull Salzburg, whose 2-1 first-leg win saw the Austrians reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Dortmund's Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig managed to progress to the next round, however, thanks to a 1-1 draw at Zenit St Petersburg which proved enough to proceed 3-2 on aggregate.

Milan, meanwhile, slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal which, combined with their 2-0 first-leg defeat, sent the Italian giants crashing out of the competition by a heavy 5-1 aggregate scoreline.

Despite Hakan Calhanoglu opening the scoring for the Rossoneri on 35 minutes, Danny Welbeck's brace, either side of Granit Xhaka's strike, proved too much for Gennaro Gattuso's side to overcome.

Athletic were aiming to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against Marseille at San Mames but lost 2-1 in a return encounter marred by crowd trouble.

Dimitri Payet and Lucas Ocampos struck for the visitors to put them out of sight, with Inaki Williams's 74th-minute goal a mere consolation in a 5-2 aggregate defeat.

Atletico Madrid had no such problems, cruising to a 5-1 win at Lokomotiv Moscow for a straightforward 8-1 aggregate triumph.

Lazio also made light work on the road, beating Dynamo Kiev 2-0 at the NSC Olimpiyskiy for a 4-2 total, while CSKA Moscow triumphed 3-2 at Lyon to progress on away goals.

Only one game on the night went to extra time, with Viktoria Plzen and Sporting Lisbon unable to be separated after 90 minutes.

The Portuguese giants progressed as Rodrigo Battaglia's 105th-minute goal was enough for a 3-2 aggregate win, even if they did lose 2-1 on the night.

Results in full: Lokomotiv Moscow 1-5 Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Marseille, Dynamo Kiev 0-2 Lazio, Zenit St Petersburg 1-1 RB Leipzig, Viktoria Plzen 2-1 Sporting Lisbon, Arsenal 3-1 AC Milan, Lyon 2-3 CSKA Moscow, Red Bull Salzburg 0-0 Borussia Dortmund
