Phil Taylor hails "phenomenal" Michael van Gerwen

Phil Taylor has heaped praise upon Michael van Gerwen following his performance during last night's PDC World Championship final.

'The Power' came from 4-2 down to beat the Dutchman 7-4 at Alexandra Palace, claiming his 16th world title in the process.

Many pundits have tipped Van Gerwen, 23, to become the next superstar of darts, and Taylor thinks that they are correct to do so.

"I've got to give Michael everything," Taylor told Sky Sports News. "The kid's phenomenal and I honestly didn't think i was going to win.

"He is one of the best players I have ever seen in my career. The bloke is fantastic."

Van Gerwen, who averaged 100.66 during the final, came within millimetres of hitting back-to-back nine-dart finishes during his 6-4 victory over James Wade in the last four.
