The Lotto-Belisol rider broke away from the peloton towards the end of the 187.5km race from Besancon to Oyonnax before crossing the line.

However, Nibali will keep the yellow jersey heading into Thursday's 12th stage from Bourg-en-Bresse to Saint-Etienne.

Giant's John Degenkolb finished in second place behind Gallopin, while Omega Pharma-Quick Step's Matteo Trentin came in third.

Daniele Bennati of Team Tinkoff-Saxo and Simon Gerrans of Orica-GreenEdge completed the top five.
