Andre Greipel wins fifth stage of Tour de France

Germany's Andre Greipel wins the fifth stage of the Tour de France to record his second victory in as many days.

Germany's Andre Greipel has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France, recording his second victory in as many days.

The Lotto Belisol rider timed a sprint to perfection to edge out second-placed Matt Goss during the uphill finish.

Argentina's Juan Jose Haedo claimed third place for Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank, while Cofidis's Samuel Dumoulin came in fourth.

World champion Mark Cavendish, who crashed out of yesterday's fourth stage, could only manage a fifth-place finish.

"I'm very happy with this second win and I want to say thank you to my teammates for all their hard work," said Greipel.

"I don't know why everyone believes I can't beat [Cavendish]. I already beat him last year and I have the best team around me.

"Yesterday he crashed, but today he was there. I'm very happy to win my second stage in the Tour de France."

The result sees Greipel go into tomorrow's 207.5km flat stage from Epernay to Metz as the firm favourite.
