Chris Froome has admitted that he is "devastated" after being forced to pull out of the Tour de France during stage five due to injury. but insists the decision to quit was correct.
The defending champion quit the race after crashing twice between Ypres and Arenberg Porte du Hainaut in rainy weather conditions.
Froome tweeted: "Devastated to have to withdraw from this years TDF. Injured wrist and tough conditions made controlling my bike near to impossible."
The 29-year-old underwent an X-ray on his wrist on Tuesday evening after crashing on stage four, but was given the go-ahead to begin stage five after scans revealed that he had not suffered a fracture.
