Alberto Contador extends Vuelta a Espana lead with victory on stage 16

Tinkoff-Saxo's Alberto Contador extends his lead at the Vuelta a Espana with victory on stage 16.

Race leader Alberto Contador dropped Team Sky's Chris Froome in the final 1km to win stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana and extend his overall advantage.

Froome had launched an attack 4km from the summit finish, but was reeled in by Contador who then rode clear to victory.

The stage win extends Contador's lead at the top of the general classification to 1 minute 36 seconds over second-placed Alejandro Valverde, who finished 55 seconds behind Contador.

Tomorrow the race takes its second rest day, with the action resuming with a flat 17th stage on Wednesday.
