Team England cyclist Scott Thwaites has admitted that Geraint Thomas was a worthy winner in today's Commonwealth Games men's cycling road race.
The 24-year-old completed the course in third place in the heavy Glasgow rain to take bronze, finishing narrowly behind New Zealand's Jack Bauer.
Wales' Thomas was comfortably ahead of the chasing pack, however, despite suffering a puncture towards the end of the race.
"Geraint was just so strong, he was unbelievable really," Thwaites told reporters. "You could tell when he was riding in the group of three, he had so much more than me and Jack. To be up there with two guys who are on the real top levels of cycling is just great, I'm mixing it with them and showing what I can.
"It's a circuit I did well on last year in the nationals so I was hoping for a good result and when I got in that group of three I just committed totally with the other two guys and we just rode it out.
"I think in a sprint like this you've just got to give whatever you've got left and both [me and Jack] had nothing really in the tank. We tried as hard as we could to chase Geraint but he was unbelievable at the end."
Thomas completed the race in a time of 4:13:05 to secure his country's fifth gold medal of the Games.
