Joanna Rowsell: 'Commonwealth Games have motivated me since Olympics'

Team England's Joanna Rowsell reveals that the Commonwealth Games have been a source of motivation since the 2012 London Olympics.

Team England rider Joanna Rowsell has revealed that the Commonwealth Games have provided her with motivation since the London Olympics in 2012.

Rowsell won Olympic gold in the team pursuit as part of Team GB two years ago, but was unable to take part in the individual event after it was removed from the Games.

The 3,000m individual pursuit is still available in the Commonwealths, however, and Rowsell revealed after winning gold that she had been looking forward to it for a long time.

"Ever since the Olympics I've been thinking about this event. I had a nice long break after the Olympics," Rowsell told reporters.

"We have the World Championships every year, which are obviously really important, a massive thing in cycling, but something like this only comes round every four years and after the Olympics it was the thought of the Games in Glasgow that really spurred me on.

"Obviously the home Olympics was massive, and this is pretty close to home being in Glasgow. I'm based down in Manchester, so not too far away. So this has been my big motivator ever since the Games, so I'm very pleased to pull it off."

Rowsell will also take part in the scratch race at the weekend.
