Cyclist Emma Pooley to retire after Commonwealth Games

Team England's Emma Pooley announces that Sunday's Commonwealth Games road race will be her last race before retiring from cycling.

England's Emma Pooley has announced that she will retire from cycling after the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The 31-year-old, who won a silver medal in the time trial event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, revealed that Sunday's road race in Glasgow will be her last competitive action.

"You have to go sometime," Pooley told cycling magazine Rouleur. "I considered retiring after the London Olympics, but I didn't feel like I was ready.

"I've been mulling it over, and came to the conclusion that the Commonwealth Games is the perfect opportunity - it's a big event, it's almost at home, and I want to go out properly, when I've planned it and have no regrets."

Pooley won the 2010 Road World Championships in Australia.
